I'm from Shrewsbury, and I can tell you about Richard Bishops ancestors. His parents were John Bishop was born in 1782 in Welshpool. Who was christened on 13 January 1782 at Berriew, Montgomery. John married Catherine Evans on 8th May 1813 at the Parish Church Berriew. The witnesses to their wedding were Sam Turner, Ann Turner and David Griffiths. At the time of marriage, John was listed as living at Castle Caereinon and Catherine at Berriew. Both John and Catherine signed the marriage register with an X. The family then moved to Shrewsbury.
What happened to Richard? We have on our records that he emigrated to France, but no further details of him. Did he keep in touch with any of his siblings? On of them Evan Bishop went to India (where he was killed), John Bishop stayed in Shrewsbury (he is my ancestor), Mary, James and William Bishop emigrated to Utah, Samuel drowned in the River Severn, Elizabeth died as a baby, Thomas was killed in an industrial accident, and Richard emigrated to France.

I'd love to know more about him. I also have details of John Bishop and Catherine Evan's ancestors if you would like to know more.

Merci de m'avoir contacté à propos de la Famille BISHOP, j'ai fait beaucoup de recherches à ce sujet. J'habite dans le département de la Sarthe (FRANCE).

Richard avait de nombreux Frères et Soeurs, il y a aussi James BISHOP qui est partit en UTAH. J'ai trouvé voici quelques années sur Internet de nombreux renseignements.

Richard était je pense un homme assez secret, je ne sais pas si sa famille savait qu'il avait été marié 4 fois.
Il n'a jamais voulu rejoindre l'UTAH. Son travail dans les filature de coton comptait beaucoup pour lui. Il ne se voyait pas travailler la terre en Amérique.

Oui, je suis une descendante du premier Mariage de Richard BISHOP et d'Harriet MADDOX le 13/04/1846 à Shrewsbury. De leur Union est née le 24/08/1846 une fille Mary Ann BISHOP.
Harriet MADDOX est décédée près de Leeds, Yorkshire, ENGLAND.

Ensuite Richard et sa fille Mary Ann ont immigré dans le département du Nord (FRANCE). Richard travaillait dans les Filatures de coton.
Mary Ann BISHOP est la Grand-Mère de ma Grand-Mère maternelle.

A ma connaissance Richard s'est marié avec 4 Femmes.
A ce jour, impossible de trouver le lieu et la date de son second mariage avec une Irlandaise née à Belfast Mc MULLEN Rosalie. Peut-être en ENGLAND ? Les Parents de Rosalie habitaient Manchester.

J'ai retrouvé dernièrement le mariage de leur fille Elizabeth BISHOP dans le Lancashire ENGLAND. Elle était mariée avec Richard TOWERS. Ils ont eu plusieurs enfants.
Donc il y a peut-être des descendants TOWERS/BISHOP ?

Troisième mariage : Richard BISHOP et Marie Josèphe DELEPLACE dans le Nord (France).

Quatrième Mariage : Richard BISHOP et Marie Augustine LETESSIER le 10/06/1880 à Champagné (Sarthe).
Ensuite ils partent en Amérique à NEW YORK. En Octobre 1880 Marie-Augustine LETESSIER habitait NEW YORK (renseignement vu sur un acte de Décès d'un Fils naturel de Marie Augustine) l'enfant était resté en France chez sa Grand-Mère maternelle à Champagné).

Décès de Marie Augustine LETESSIER en décembre 1886 à Champagné (Sarthe). C'est dans l'acte de succession de Marie Augustine que j'ai trouvé la date de décès de RICHARD BISHOP.

"RICHARD BISHOP est décédé le 20/08/1886 à New York et inhumé au cimetière de Calvary le 22 Aout 1886"

De leur Union est né un Fils qui avait 5 ans au décès de ses Parents. Cet Enfant doit être né en Amérique.
Il doit avoir la nationalité Anglaise comme son Père. Pouvez trouver sur les registres Anglais ce Fils qui s'appelle aussi Richard BISHOP comme son Père ?
Actuellement je possède un acte de Tutelle de 1886 pour cet Enfant, à cette date il habitait en Sarthe, sûrement chez sa 1/2 Soeur Mary-Ann BISHOP qui est décédée à Champagné (Sarthe) en 1897.

Les CENSUS de Champagné ne sont pas visibles actuellement aux Archives de la Sarthe, donc je suis dans l'attente pour cette information qui me permettrai de terminer mon Travail de Généalogie. Car cet Enfant est la seule personne qui manque dans mon arbre généalogique.

Avez-vous des photos de John BISHOP et Catherine EVANS, de Richard ?

I have looked into John Bishop's siblings a little more carefully. I am not sure that "Evan Bishop" existed. There are no records to prove he existed. I think he is a mix up with John Bishop (who was called John Evans when he was born as his parents were not married at the time, they got married later and his name became John Bishop). Samuel Bishop drowned in the local canal at "Comet Bridge" next to their house in Spring Gardens and not the river severn, The newspaper said Friday 06 April 1838. Child. 4 years old, named Samuel Bishop, who was discovered drowned in the Canal, near the Comet Bridge. There being evidence the poor fellow fell into the water, the jury returned verdict round Drowned.

There are no records to prove that Thomas died in an industrial accident - I have looked through the local newspapers at the time and I think it would have been reported there. I also asked Shrewsbury Archives and there are no inquests or records of this either. They said that there would be an inquest if this had happened. However Thomas is in trouble with the police before he disappears from the records. 30 Dec 1839 he is on trial and receives 3 months in prison for receiving stolen goods. His is alive in 1844 as he is in court for attacking the Police Constable and a man named “Fox” and was sentenced to 2 months in jail. The newspaper say that he is frequently a trouble maker. Then I have no further records of him. He is a mystery. The Bishop family in Shrewsbury appear in the newspapers a lot. John Bishop's wife and grown up daughters are involved in shoplifting and go to prison for this. His son's are in court for fighting or poaching.

I think that his second wife was already married. Richard married Hannah Steele nee Walls at Leeds Parish Church on 21st July 1860. However Hannah's previous husband Lawrence Steele was still alive - and living away from home as a soldier. In 1851 Lawrence is living in the Clarence and Forehouse barrack and is serving as a Private. I think in the 7th Regiment of the Foot (which later became the Royal Fusiliers) therefore Hannah was not a widow at the time of her marriage to Richard Bishop. I think Richard discovers this, leaves his "wife" and moves to France
